Burgundy is a scenic wonderland synonymous with fine wine, delicious food and above all, a peaceful way of life.

Boasting everything from prehistoric caves to ancient abbeys and centuries-old châteaux, its name derives from the Burgondes, a people who moved westwards into the region from Germany in the 5th century.

We will stay in the 16th Century Chateau de Chailly our first 2 nights, driving around to experience the medieval charme of Baune, enjoy wines at Chateau de Pommard and discover the surrounding of this natural wonders' land.

Beaune is without a doubt the capital of the Burgundy vineyard, both in the eyes of wine connoisseurs and fans of this medieval town.  There are some unmissable sights such as the Hospices de Beaune.

This 15th-century hospital with flamboyant Gothic-style architecture and multicoloured roofing, shows the direct connections there once were between Flanders and the Dukes of Burgundy. This prestigious building, built under the reign of Duke of Burgundy, Philip the Good, is an architectural masterpiece.

It's hard to imagine that such a monument was once used as a hospital. But this was its function up until it became a museum.

Bourg-en-Bresse

Bourg-en-Bresse is grand, upright and plainly proud of its solid French credentials. The stalls clutter the roads and mix with the classic French cafe street life. Here shoppers, diners and drinkers all mixed together form almost a perfect portrait of a French society that we all always loved so much.

Bourg lies in one of the principal gastronomic districts in France close to Lyon, known worldwide for its foodie prowess. The local cuisine speciality is home produced poultry known as Poulet de Bresse. Chickens are bred under very exacting conditions by local farmers on their tiny estates. These birds are of such high quality that all are sold locally and there are never any left over to supply an external export market.

Hautecombe Abbey

Overlooking the Lac du Bourget, the royal Abbaye houses a collection of sepulchres from famous Savoyard counts and the last kings and queens of Italy.

Its Gothic architecture and view from the cliffs overlooking the lake make it one of the most-interesting sites in the Savoie Mont Blanc area.

Annecy

Annecy’s old town – the Vieille Ville – has more waterways than roads, surrounded by pretty, pastel-coloured buildings.

The water comes from the River Thiou, which at only 3.5km long is one of Europe’s shortest rivers, connecting the River Fier to Lake Annecy. But what it lacks in length it makes up for in scenic surroundings.

The river splits and rejoins around the old town, creating islands linked by arched bridges, draped in flowers during spring and summer.
