The colums of STOA

Walk down a country road, with a forest on your right and a meadow on your left. The soothing silence is interrupted only by the occasional moos of the cows in the field.

In the distance, illuminated by the sun’s rays, you will spot a low, flat-topped structure, supported by numerous columns. This structure, STOA 169, wil be an unexpected highlight of your southern Germany road trip.

An artistic project developed over thirty years by Bernd Zimmer, a German artist, STOA 169 is a wondrous place. Surrounded by nature, STOA 169 resembles a Greek colonnade, with a flat roof supported by more than a hundred columns. Each column is unique, designed by renowned artists from all over the world.

The idea behind STOA 169 is to create an archive of today’s art and represent an appeal for mutual understanding of differences and peaceful coexistence.

For 60 years the Mercedes 300 SL has been the epitome of a sports car legend – a byword for outstanding innovation and refined athleticism. HERRENCHIEMSEE,
THE BAVARIAN VERSAILLES

Herrenchiemsee was built in a splendid position by king Ludwig II starting on 1878. The castle in fact rises on an island of lake Chiemsee, the Herreninsel.

The façade is an identical copy of the Versailles one: Herrenchiemsee is presented as a hymn to the power and glory to the ‘Roi Soleil’ , and Ludwig, who always was a great admirer of this mythical historical figure, decided to erect an exact copy of the original French castle.

Ludwig Fessler

48363259731_49e57b9879_o.jpg

For over 170 years, Chiemsee steam boats have been safely and conveniently transporting passengers across the lake and to the islands all year round.

We will have a lunch cruise onboard the 1927 "Ludwig Fessler" saloon steamer. It was a busy time: components were delivered incessantly and workers hammered and riveted, carpentered and painted. Everyone involved eagerly awaited the completion of the 53 m long and 11.60 m wide boat.

With its elegant appearance, tasteful saloon and unique atmosphere, the steam boat quickly became a popular pleasure boat.

Its conversion in 1972/73 put an end to the magical era of coal, when its steam engine was replaced by a modern diesel engine. But the romanticism of the paddle steamer has remained, long after its conversion.

DAY 4 - 6 September

Stage 3, TRADITIONAL BAVARIA

About 245 km (4 hours drive)

This day we will cross Bavaria, leaving the Tegernsee lake towards Ettal abbey. As if it wasn’t enough for Bavarian villages to seem like they belong in a fairy tale, they went ahead and painted the walls of all the houses in this village with fairy-tales by Brothers Grimm. After the visit to Ettal monastery and brewery, you will head on toward Garmish.

You will end your epic road trip in Bavaria by visiting the highest vantage point of Germany, which offers clear views over 400 peaks in Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland, with only the sky above.

Check in at the Burghotel Falkenstein .

TIME SCHEDULE:

9.00                  Departure

2 hours drive

11.00/12.00    Visit to Ettal Abbey and Brewery

30 minutes drive

1 1/2 hours drive

16.30               Check-in at the Burghotel Falkenstein

19.30              Dinner at the hotel

Ettal Abbey

The large, castle-like grounds of the monastery are the result of a long historical development and demonstrates one of the main concerns of a Benedictine Abbey: An independent religious community which produces everything needed for life and thus has all the important workshops and undertakings, if possible within the confines of the monastery.

This Benedictine monastery is absolutely stunning on the inside. What’s more, it houses a brewery (it’s Germany, you can never be too far from beer).

During our visit you will try the locally-brewed beer and the Ettal liqueurs made by the monks at Ettal Abbey.

Garmisch

Arriving in Garmisch you will see that everything around you is so picturesque it seems as if time had stopped. Balconies adorned with beautiful flowers, houses built primarily in the 18th century … Wherever you look, you see colourful Lüftlmalerei mural paintings on the facades. These artistic creations frame the historic district of Garmisch like the open pages of a picture book.

BAD SCHUSSENRIED MONASTERY

This is a place some have called a 7th heaven along the Baroque Route.

The library hall at the Bad Schussenried Monastery is one of southern Germany’s most beautiful pearls. Built by monks at the height of the German region’s 18th-century wealth, this flamboyant and colorful library is more than meets the eye.

Friedrichshafen

In the Zeppelin city of Friedrichshafen, Idyllically set against Lake Constance, impressive landscapes and a vibrant life blend seamlessly with Swabian homeliness.

Enjoy the view from the attractive lake shore over the unique lake and Alpine panorama or float over towns and cultural landscapes alongside the Alps in a Zeppelin airship. In the Zeppelin Museum, you can discover the history of airship travel while the Dornier Museum brings 100 exciting years of air and space travel to life.
